Editorial Reviews:

At the age of 41, and having never backpacked more than thirty miles in her life, Nancy Shepherd set off to hike the 2,168 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Along the way she grew from an inexperienced hiker into a confident long-distance backpacker, a status earned through mental, as well as physical, struggles. Lessons learned on the trail helped form her new self and gave her the strength to go beyond the perceived "rules" of the trail and end her hike on her own terms.

Summary: Nancy Cheated!
Comment: Ive read several AT thru hike accounts. This was the first by a woman solo hiker. Despite a lot of bellyaching about trail conditions "My Own Hike" did capture my attention as most of it was well written. However I am sure there are many other women who have thru hiked the AT without taking blue blazed shortcuts and completely bypassing some seventy miles in Maine! As it turns out Nancy's Own Hike is her own peculiar way of breaking the thru hiker's codebook.

Summary: Dreams and Perseverance
Comment: Ms. Shepherd says in her Introduction, "I'll persevere, knowing someone is counting on me, and this time the someone is me." Perfect.

As someone who has often imagined thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, but known absolutely nothing about hiking that kind of distance, I was excited to read about this woman's journey. What I found was not only the story of a hiker, but also the story of a woman who learned to count on herself and follow her dreams, even when those dreams were scary. Ms. Shepherd's account is riveting in its descriptions of the places she sees and the adventures she has, and I felt like I was right there with her, cheering her on. In reading her words, I felt her grow as a person along with her growing as a hiker, and I wished I could have been there with her at the very top of Katahdin at the end of her amazing journey.

I recommend this book not only to people who are interested in hiking and the AT, but also to people who have big dreams. Ms. Shepherd will inspire you and show you that you can reach your dreams - as long as you persevere, anything is possible.

Summary: Interested in the Appalachian Trail? READ THIS BOOK!!
Comment: This book is a must-read for anyone who is planning an Appalachian Trail thru-hike; who has ever thought about hiking the Appalachian Trail; who has previously hiked the AT; or who enjoys reading about others who have hiked the AT.

Ms. Shepherd, following her life-long dream, takes us along as she experiences the ups and downs, joys and heartaches, pains and pleasures of trail life. From Springer Mountain in Georgia, when she takes the first of millions of steps, to her struggle to the top of Mt. Katahdin in Maine 6 months later, you will feel like you're right there with her. Feel her excitement at her first bear sighting; her joy at finding trail magic and trail angels; her pain, as hiking miles and miles with a 30-pound backpack takes its toll on her feet and knees; her terror as she takes a tumble down a slick rock slab; learn the art of "yogi-ing" a meal; find out what it's like to sleep beside a dog in an over-crowded shelter; savor the new and different cuisines she discovered; enjoy the views, the sunsets, the wild ponies, and the friends she made along the way.

This book is well written, easy to read, and hard to put down! Don't miss this one!
