Easy to Use Right Out of the Box

Garmin's own navigation is easy to use
 One of Garmin's key product philosophies is, "to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box," and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin's portable navigation devices.

Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

New -- Voice Recognition

Usable voice recognition is something we've been waiting to see for a  long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn't just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There's even a warning on every GPS not to do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too.

The nüvi 800s aren't the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use.

The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. It has two buttons. One is, "listen." The other is, "stop listening". Hit the "listen" button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say, "find nearest Italian restaurant," for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say "go to" and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The nüvi 880 also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say, "find place, Starbucks," if that's your coffee mojo.

Of course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the nüvi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it.

Speech recognition is available for American English, British English, European French, European Spanish, German, Italian, and Netherlands Dutch languages.

Widescreen -- See More of What's Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Multi-Destination Routing

This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you  save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).

A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Where Am I?

Garmin's "Where Am I?" feature is a useful safety feature on all nüvis, but voice recognition makes it even better.

On any nüvi (including this one), you can just tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. With the 800s, all you have to do is say "Where am I?" to get the info.

Where's My Car?

Like the nüvi 700s, the 800s will also remember where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. The nüvi's Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker lets match it to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Comment: I've had a Garmin 660 that I have loved for the past couple of years so decided to give my spouse the latest & greatest for Christmas this year. We drove across country using this newer model & we couldn't be happier! Garmin has improved on several items from previous versions, such as the volume controls--now you can select which part you want muted, such as voice commands, but keep the bluetooth and entertainment (ie: audiobooks, MP3) at desired levels. There are also several other features that have been improved & they are all quite handy. The only complaint I would have on the logic of the device is some of the routing information--if I am on a specific route & I select the weather or restaurant feature, it would be nice if it gave you an option to just get the information that is in line with the specific route. If that is my only complaint, then you know it is a good device! I highly recommend it.

Summary: Not perfect, but the best one out there
Comment: I am a "GPS buff", having had a GPS for flying since '97 and one for driving since '02, and have had several for various functions (flying, hiking, driving) since then. While not perfect, this is the best one I have seen for driving, and in my opinion it is the best one out there. Here are the strengths and weaknesses I have experienced.
Strengths:
- Locks onto the GPS signal like a bulldog. My old GPS would occasionally lose the satellite signal on cloudy days or while driving on a tree-lined road. With this one, I can leave the GPS sitting on the floor of the car turned on (while not in use) and it will still get and hold a signal.
- Very sharp, high resolution screen. Easy to read at night or in daylight.
- Intuitive user interface. Everything makes sense.
- Very thin and light. This makes it easier to store and transport, and it can sit closer to the window without bumping against it.
- The traffic, weather, and cheapest gas price features are great. I live outside Boston, and the traffic updates are wonderful.
- Great battery life. When traveling, I will put it into a carrying case I purchased, and not even bother bringing along the power cord. I don't bother taking it out of the case -- just wedge the whole thing between the windshield and the dashboard -- and it works great with no setup effort.
- The Bluetooth remote allows you to command the GPS without using your hands or taking your eyes off the road. It works almost flawlessly, with excellent voice recognition.
- Optimizes routes with multiple destinations. If you need to go two (or three, or four...) places, it will calculate the most efficient route to go all of those places. I would imagine delivery drivers love it.
- The 880 speaks the street names (for example, "In 500 feet, turn right on Adams Street"). The spoken street name really help you figure out where to turn when you have roads very close together.
- Always shows you your next turn in text at the top of the screen. Also, an icon on the left of the screen tells you the current speed limit. Getting a text version of your entire route (like MapQuest) is one finger push away.
Weaknesses:
- The default nighttime brightness setting is a bit too bright. You can modify the brightness, of course, but this affects the daytime brightness as well.
- The built-in speaker volume would be better if it went louder. Could be an issue with the windows rolled down. Would be an issue in a convertible.
- Down in the "Settings", you choose whether you want the 880 to calculate your various routes using "Faster Time" or "Shorter Distance". It then calculates all of your routes using whatever setting you have chosen (the factory-default is "Faster Time"). My experience has been that there are some times when I am better off using "Faster Time", and other times when "Shorter Distance" makes sense. Heck, sometimes it makes sense to look at both and then make a decision, or to go part of the route "Faster" and part of the route "Shorter". My old Garmin GPS gave the Faster / Shorter option each time you chose a destination...very handy. On the new Garmin this function is buried away and thus difficult to change.
- It has a Detour function, but previous generation Garmins gave you more control over the Detour...you could tell it to choose a detour for the next mile, five miles, ten miles, etc. On the new Garmin you can choose a Detour, but have much less control over the duration of the detour.
- No buttons! This is a nitpick, but the only button or switch on the whole unit is the power switch, everything else is accessed through the touchscreen menu system. This makes for a nice clean design, but I preferred the old design that had a few buttons that gave you access to key features. For example, if I held down a button, it would pull up a list of recent routes I had chosen. If I double-clicked that button, it would ask me if I want directions back to Home. Now I have to use the menus to do these two (and all other) things. The menu system is very nice, but I think Garmin chose form over function in some cases.

One last thing. Regardless of what GPS you get, consider buying an optional dashboard "Bean Bag" mount. Most GPS come with either a "suction cup" mount which attaches the GPS to the glass, or an adhesive mount that attaches the GPS to the dashboard. They both work great, but they are difficult to attach (so most people leave them up all the time) and the window mount leaves a mark on the window. Portable GPS units are the stolen from cars more than any other item these days...you definitely do not want to leave them up when your car is unattended, and thieves roam parking lots looking for the GPS or the tell-tale mark left from the window mount. With a bean bag mount (the bean bag has a soft rubbery underside that holds it firmly in place so it does not slide around) you just place the unit on top of your dashboard when you are using it, and then put it out of sight on the floor or in the glove compartment when you leave the car. It is easy to use, out of sight when not in use, and does not leave tell-tale marks.

Comment: What a great device! Easy to use, large screen makes navigation a breeze. This is my third Garmin unit and it's by far the best. Voice recognition takes a little time to get used to but now there's no more leaning over to touch the screen and risk runing off the road! Although a little pricey, this is THE unit to own.

Comment: As full time RVers, we have been using navigation systems since their infancy. User friendliness, accuracy, voice commands and an easy to read screen make this unit a must-have. A buggaboo we've run into relates to the voice commands. We have a very large, noisy truck (a small semi-tractor,really) and the unit, on occasion, has difficulty understanding my voice commands.
Note: this unit is not recommended for motorcycles as it is not waterproof. However, we have it mounted on our motor scooter. Unfortunately, the Garmin's Bluetooth won't sync with our helmets communication system. Not sure which device is at fault.
Unit works well when plugged in. However, the battery has relatively low capacity untethered.
